The first glimpse of The Roots
2005 | Label: Groove Distribution / The Orchard

Organix offered the first glimpse of how the Roots’ blend of limber rhythms and deft rhymes could seduce coffee shop and dive bar patrons alike, launching a bidding war among six record labels. Black Thought and emcee Malik B often passed the mic back and forth over nothing more than ?uestlove’s crackling snares and a tiptoeing bass line, urging listeners to sink into their seats as the band refuses to take itself too seriously. Interlude “There’s a Riot Goin’ On” is actually 13 seconds of rude snoring. Black Thought slurs his catchiest call-and-response chorus (“Essawhamah?”), and drummer ?uestlove and keyboardist Scott Storch match his nonsensical spitting note for note. The Roots only crank up the volume on a seemingly aimless spoken word, as a bassline and cymbals jitter in anticipation before Black Thought eases up with the punchline: “Damn! I missed my spot — Writer’s Block.”

Easier to get

BuddyToledo

I once called Ahmir Thompson to see where I could get this album. I'm glad it is easier to get now.

A Nice Beginning

agentattitude

The debut album of one the best Hip-Hop groups is hit and miss but it shows a glimpse of the genius that the group shows on their later albums. Real musicians along with a real MC i.e. talented M.C., The Roots present a much-needed breath of fresh air to a growing dearth of stale cookie cutter lyrics, un-original rhyming styles and beat that have plagued the music scene as of late. LONG LIVE THE ROOTS . . . and please help save Hip-Hop music.

Icon: The Roots

By Christina Lee, eMusic Contributor

The more the Roots face the bright stage lights, whether on tour or Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the more their music recedes into big city high-rises and a bleak worldview. Founding members Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson still remember when they pitched freestyle raps over pot-and-pan beats on Philadelphia's South Street, and when Thompson got accepted to Julliard but couldn't afford to attend. In the 25 years since, the hip-hop band… more »

They Say All Music Guide

The Roots’ low-profile debut set out many of the themes they would employ over the course of their successful career. An intro, “The Roots Is Comin’,” is barely over a minute long, yet long enough to exemplify the band’s funky bassline (here played by Leonard Hubbard), their dreamy and emotional organ chords (thanks to Scott Storch), and their ferociously swift yet clear rhymes from the group’s focal MC Black Thought. The song that follows, “Pass the Popcorn” would have been called a “posse cut” in 1993. Everyone could’ve used a little more practice before stepping up to the mic on this song, but the spirit of the song are not lost in the amateurishness. The creative venture “Writers Block” is an example of just the opposite, as Black Thought flows with spoken word, comically and creatively expressing the experience of a day in the life of a Philadelphian using mass transit. The instrumentation is appropriately frantic and punctuated by [cymbal] crashes (like any mass transit system). Fans of Do You Want More, the Roots album released immediately following Organix, will recognize the music of “I’m Out Deah,” “Leonard I-V,” and “Essawhamah?” Another track to note is “The Session (Longest Posse Cut in History),” — no false claim at 12 minutes and 43 seconds. This album should be a part of any Roots fan’s collection — not so much because it is an example of their artistry at its best, but because it allows you to see where they came from and how fruitful of a journey it’s been. – Qa’id Jacobs
