eMusic Selects alums return with a wistful, desperate account of holding tight and letting go
2011 | Label: Saddle Creek

When woozy Canadian indie-rock act Rural Alberta Advantage released its first LP in early 2008, no balloons dropped, no horns sounded, no blogs buzzed — at least until later that year, when we chose that album, Hometowns, for eMusic Selects. Soon enough, the band's taut-but-raggedy, three-piece dance-folk was winning hearts and minds far beyond the Great White North, including in Omaha, Neb., home of Saddle Creek records, which re-released the record in 2009 and smartly let the band simmer for two more years before ushering out its sophomore release.

Departing picks up where Hometowns left off, following that album's wistful closer "In the Summertime" with the wry "Two Lovers," which contemplates the mechanics of a warm-weather affair that's perhaps dragged on too long. "I'll hold you tight enough to crush your veins," promises Nils Edenloff, who seems to have been taking voice-shredding lessons from Jeff Mangum, his strained yawps buttressed throughout by distantly ominous organ drone, twitchily danceable drum-lines and a rowdy electric guitar that nearly overtakes the acoustic strumming that was favored on the band's debut.

The album is full of references to lovers holding each other close, holding each other tight, but every embrace is saddled with a… read more »

Loved Hometowns and LOVE Departing

ThrowingThings

With Departing, RRA has tuned in on their own, unique sound. Prior to this album, while still brilliant, their "roots" , or influences (NMH,The Tragically Hip, etc), were showing loud and clear from song to song. Well no more. These guys have matured and Departing shows it. All the tracks are bursting with any energy all their own and all are good. Start with track #2, "The Breakup" if you are sampling for the first time. You'll be back for the rest shortly though.

Soulful Bliss

Caph

Some may describe this music as dirge. I happen live for soulful dirge. This music manages to combine pain and pleasure to an extraordinary degree. Minor keys are worked to their very limit. Muscle Relaxants and especially Tornado '87 draw me so far in to the music that it leaves me feeling exhausted, but in a good way.

Give it three tries

Like an earlier commenter has said, this album lacks the energy that the first album had, but, on the third listen to this album I was absolutely amazed by this album. The first time I heard 'Departing' I was ready to toss it in the trash. On the third pass I muttered out loud, 'I love this album.' It's that good. It is like one of those pictures that you stare long enough at and then you just get it. Eventually you 'get' this album and you'll hear the complexity of the drummers rhythms, you'll pick up on the small nuances that make the songs so endearing. It's a great album. I waited a looong time for this album.

A bit disappointing

I am a huge fan of Hometowns, and was super excited for Departing. It's OK but seems to lack the exuberance and energy of their first album.

I love just randomly finding great music by previously unknown bands (to me). Nice find!

like the north star, beautiful song with just voice, drums and every now and then a piano. The whole album is great!

Outstanding.

Super, awesome, epic second album by these guys. My top album of the year thus far. Good Night is one of the most stunning album closers I've heard in a while. Go get!

Worth waiting for

martin.batchelor

I really enjoy RAA and this new album has already had quite a few plays. Download this and enjoy, but like me you may wish that it was longer and that Amy Cole had more chance to add some contrast to the gravelly voice of Nils. Lets hope the wait for the next album is not so long
