Oh My Goodness Oh My Goodness!

carlosdev

Chris Bailey is the Adam Richman of rock - he takes on all challenges, prepared or not. This was perhaps the Saints finest moment as an album; although individual songs would surpass the songs on this album, they had never been nor ever would be as consistantly marvelous as they are here. Each track is different in style and intent and each one succeeds; listen to their single "Just Like Fire Would" (which I first caught on the lamented 120 Minutes) and the title track; then listen to songs like Hynn to St. Jude, Big Hits (On the Underground), Temples of the Lord and Love or Imagination and see what you think. One of the early rock releases by TVT Records (along with Shona Laing) was one of the best the label ever had on their roster. Long out of print in the US, this is a welcome addition to eMusic.

A worthwhile download!

This is a uniformly great album, kind of rough-hewn and melodic at the same time. I haven't heard it since about 1990 and am happy to find it here on emusic.

Call this the second coming of the Saints, but the only thing this record has in common with previous Saints recordings is Chris Bailey. Still, it’s a sharp, tuneful, and (ahem) mature work that shows Bailey’s increasing confidence as a singer and songwriter. One listen to songs as grabbing as “Celtic Ballad” or the great “Just Like Fire Would” (which is kind of a neat pun) will convince you that despite the differences, the new Saints were a good band for completely different reasons than the old Saints. – John Dougan
