This classic nugget of garage-rock pushes too hard –— and that's good
1999 | Label: GNP Crescendo

The Seeds and "Pushin 'Too Hard" are well enshrined in the garage-acropolis, and if that guitar solo (Jan Savage call-and-responses-himself) and Sky Saxon's feral whine aren't enough, there are those drums, one step removed from "Wipe Out," and an electric piano that whirls the song about like a lariat. (The band even dressed like cowboys and Indians.) The iconic 1967 hit would overshadow their mortal time as a band — and, blessedly limited musicians, the Seeds were not likely to improve on it — but they explored the riff they were given in all its permutations, to the point of obsession (see the 14-minute "Up in Her Room" on their second album).

Their self-titled debut has their tangled influences topmost, not yet hippie-fried (their legend would either suffer or illuminate when Sky worked white-robed on Sunset Blvd. in a health food restaurant), highlighting their unique texture, even today when the fuzz-tone and tambourine duel of "Evil Hoodoo" (two chords!) has become a touchstone of archetype. Witness their more bizarre and enjoyable trails: Savage's flamenco roll of chord (something he shared with Robbie Krieger of the Doors, and there are times on this record where one might hear mutual repercussions at work);… read more »

Garage Classic

Jasonik

This is a solid compendium of early 60's poppy garage rock. Everything seems fresh and ramshackle. I heard "Can't Seem to Make You Mine" in a bar and downloaded this as fast as I could. This song, with Sky Saxon's squeals, snaky guitar leads, bubbling piano make it one of the best examples of garage rock I've ever heard.

Early 60's rock 'n' roll

"Inept" and "forgettable?" - NO! EMUSIC-01D6347B calls them "damned hypnotic" - YES! I've been mindlessly mesmerized. If I wasn't tapping my feet, I'd think I was in a trance. They were magic! Don't be afraid; download. Or if you hate Up In Her Room, forget about it, not your thing :-)

This is actually two albums - the Seeds self-titled debut, and 2nd album 'a web of sound.' But the Seeds sounds is the Seeds sound, and the two albums seemlessly become one! The 2-chord simplicity of these songs is their strength, there's something damned hypnotic about them. Great fuzzy guitars and jangly piano too. And not to forget Sky's voice. I think I read in an interview with Kim Fowley where he said that Sky and other garage singers sang in that nasally way cos of all the LA smog. Whatever the reason, Sky's a great singer, and the icing on the top of this great band.

The Seeds- Mr. Farmer

Back in the day Mr. Farmer was one hip tune. Pushin' Too Hard was a great party favorite. Everybody had their own dance moves to get it on with that tune!

Pure Crap for Then People

This is perhaps the greatest garage band of the 60s on their greatest album. So what? Download it and be happy already. And if you are too young to know it, it's not too late.... you aren't dead... yet... however, if your attention span is small, download the classic tracks "Can't Seem To Make You Mine", "No Escape", and "Pushin Too Hard."
