Rock 'n' Roll, the way it was meant to be played

whiskyprajer

Listening to the Sheepdogs, the only current band that comes to mind is Kings of Leon. But I think KoL strains to sound this good. The crucial difference is the Sheepdogs aren’t searching for a sound — they’ve nailed it down. If you spin this week’s release, Five Easy Pieces, or better yet, last year’s Learn & Burn, you’ll catch a heady bouquet of worthy influences: the edgy wistfulness of mid-career Guess Who, the tightly-controlled guitar-driven playfulness of Dinosaur Jr., the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd, a slapdash of CCR when they were still having fun, and just enough of the Beatles to acknowledge the obvious and move on to the business at hand — putting on a rock show for the here and now.

Almost Famous

Imagine the opening act from a 1972 concert by the Allman Brothers was cryogenically frozen and then reanimated in 2009, untouched by everything that had happened in the intervening time. Oh ya, and imagine that band blew the Allmans off the stage just before they were frozen. Then you'll have a bit of an idea what the Sheepdogs sound like.

even better live

This album is a must. Don't let the short tracks fool you - quality is top notch all around. Just saw them at Edgefest and confirmed for myself that they are the real deal. They rock in beautiful harmony in concert, even tighter than on this (fantastic) record. BTW - check out their site for a FREE download of their 2008 release.

Unbelievable....

...in just about every way. This band absolutely NAILS groovy guitar-based southern rock (Allman Brothers et al) more consistently pitch-perfect than almost any of the bands of that vintage. Plus this is only their second album. Plus they're from Saskatoon, Canada. HOW CAN THIS BE??
