The Shirelles, The Shirelles
1999 | Label: RKO Records / The Orchard

If the Ronettes were the hotties of girl-groupdom and the Shangri-Las were the black-leather rebels, the Shirelles were the genre's all-American sweethearts. Led by the cashmere-voiced Shirley Allston, the group's perfect encapsulations of teenage longing still ring true today — songs you'll find here, like "Soldier Boy" and "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," remain all too pertinent.

Best girl group of all time

RockinDaddio

Not packaged and sold like the Supremes, they have a soul sound you can't buy.

i don't know where the one reviewer got the idea that these were on warwick records..try scepter records.that's more accurate. baby it's you and will you love me tomorrow were released on scepter but at different times and the lables weren't identical in appearance. while many of the oldies artists released mono albums, often times a stereo album was also released, the mono recording being a few dollars less/.sonny & cher's 'look at us" lp(1964,atco records)is one example of this

The Shirelles were my father's favorite group. After years of resistance I finally took this album for a spin. Of course I'd heard most of the tracks before, but listening to them all at once, makes you appreciate them as a group all the more.

Teenage Graceland

By Wayne Robins, eMusic Contributor

After Elvis went into the Army and before the British Invasion, the years 1958-63 were rock's forgotten years. But they were the years that shaped the musical tastes of baby boomers and of acts from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to Bruce Springsteen and the Ramones. Hear the dance sensations, the one-hit-wonders, the girl groups and doo-wop singers, surfers and rockabilly twangers, the birth of Motown, the evolution of R&B into soul and so much… more »

Doo Wop: An eMusic Guide

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

Doo Wop is as uniquely American a musical art form as jazz or the blues or hip-hop. But over time it has been cast aside, identified as "old people music" and thus profoundly unhip. This kind of dismissal ignores not just the genre's influence—R&B would never be the same after doo wop's mannered thunderclap style came along—but also its vivid and naked emotionalism, performed in a uniquely consonant style of singing created in the 1940s.… more »
