The consciousness-raising hit machine
2006 | Label: Fantasy Records

For the first half of the '70s, the Staple Singers were that rarest of all musical creatures: a consciousness-raising hit machine. This 1972 album contains two of their biggest crossover smashes — “Respect Yourself” and “I’ll Take You There” — as well as the Top Ten R&B hit “The World.” But the whole record is up to that standard, with Mavis’s fiery vocals and Pops’ lowdown guitar delivering the goods on such inspirational gospel-tinged soul numbers as “We the People,” “I’m Just Another Soldier” and “Who.”

Be Altitude, flys high yet keeps your feet planted firmly on the ground. The messages are here and the sound is fantastic! So soulful and full of life. Has always been a favorite of mine and could soon be one of yours. Pops and the girls really had it goin' on. God bless the Staples!

This is agruably the best of the Stax album (along with Isaac Hayes' "Shaft"). Not a dull song in the bunch. It was a great album on vinyl, but on digital audio, it's fantastic!

You Gotta Get This One!

GuitarPlaya2000

This recording has to be the epitome of the Stax sound and The Staple Singers' vocal styles. This is the one that made me a Staples Singers fan today! I first bought this album in the early 70s for the two hits, "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There". Believe me, the remaining tracks are just as great. It's now better in digital audio. You gotta get this one!

The Staples’ finest single album, containing three Top Ten R&B hits, “Respect Yourself,” “I’ll Take You There,” and “This World.” The first two also were pop Top 20s, “I’ll Take You There” going all the way to number one. – Rob Bowman
