2007 | Label: Vee-Jay Ltd. Partnership / The Orchard

Sam Phillips famously described Howlin 'Wolf's voice as "where the soul of man never dies." That could just as easily apply to the sound Roebuck "Pops" Staples and his three children made. And it would be perfectly logical, too: as a youngster in Mississippi, before he became a dedicated Christian, Staples hung out and traveled with Wolf and Charley Patton (who also doubled as a minister if the money was good). Transplanted to Chicago, in dire need of money, Staples took his spooky guitar style, rehearsed his daughters Cleotha, Yvonne and Mavis and his son Pervis in some gospel songs, and started hitting the churches. Nobody had ever sounded like that — particularly not like Mavis, whose voice continues to be a marvel on her recent We'll Never Turn Back — and Vee-Jay was lucky enough to be the first to record them. Primal mystery, eerie sounds and solid faith all come through. You've heard some of these songs before, but not like this.

Righteous Rhythms: The Sanctified Sound of Gospel

By Mike McGonigal, eMusic Contributor

African-American gospel is more than just the heart and soul of so much popular music, from soul and R&B to dance and jazz. It's also among the most vital, emotional and original art forms America has yet produced. From the house wrecking sound of Golden Age quartets and the gorgeous fluttering of the divas of early gospel music to the stomping and funky sound of contemporary R+B influenced urban gospel, we've got a delightful introduction… more »

Mother Father Sister Brother

By John Morthland, eMusic Contributor

MFSB was the name of the crack Philadelphia International house band in the '70s; though some insisted the initials stood respectfully for Mother F(youknowtherest) Soul Band, the "official" translation was Mother Father Sister Brother, an expression of black unity as well as of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's family-style operation. But real-life family bands have been common in both popular and folk music for a long time, especially in more traditional genres like country, gospel… more »

Vee-Jay Records

By Ed Ward, eMusic Contributor

Vee-Jay Records was Chicago's "other" record label. Chess had ruled the city's blues scene since 1947, but in 1953, Gary, Indiana record-store owner Vivian Bracken Carter and her brother James Bracken found, after releasing a single by a group of high-school kids called the Spaniels, that there was more talent around the Chicago area than Chess could deal with. When a Mississippi-born Chicago slaughterhouse worker named Jimmy Reed showed up after Chess had turned him… more »
