Melancholy & Beautiful

chaduran

So, so good. I have bought this particular album in every format at least two times. Roommates throughout the years can attest to it being in constant rotation, probably more so than any other album I have ever owned. This is such a melancholy album, even though much of it is upbeat, with jangly guitars and an odd sense of melody. Harriet Wheeler's voice is truly one-of-a-kind, childlike yet totally assured and lovely. I recommend tracks 1-10. IT IS TIME FOR A REMASTERED VERSION OF THIS!!!

The Sundays’ debut album builds on the layered, ringing guitar hooks and unconventional pop melodies of the Smiths, adding more ethereal vocals and a stronger backbeat. As evidenced by the lilting, melancholy single “Here’s Where the Story Ends,” it’s a winning combination, making Reading, Writing and Arithmetic a thoroughly engaging debut. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
