Stax's answer to the "sweet" soul acts of the '70s
2006 | Label: Stax

The Temprees were Stax's (actually they were on the offshoot label We Produce) answer to the "sweet" soul acts of the '70s, thanks to Jasper "Jabbo" Phillips' soothing falsetto. His rich, aching delivery dominates such songs as "Your Love Is All I Need," "If I Could Say What's on My Mind," "I Love You, You Love Me" and their beautiful cover of the Five Royals and Shirelles title track. Phillips was so majestic he frequently made listeners forget they were hearing a trio.

They Say All Music Guide

Led by the late Jasper “Jabbo” Philips’ sweet falsetto, the Temprees excelled at singing heart touching sweet southern jerkers. Representative of that infectious sound are “Dedicated to the One I Love,” “If I Could Say What’s on My Mind,” and “I Love You, You Love Me.” Jabbo forsakes the falsetto for a natural tenor similar to the Newcomers’ Bertram Brown on “Your Love Is All I Need,” the mid-tempo “I Love, I Love,” “You Make Me Feel So Good Baby,” and James Taylor’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight/A Love Song.” Mid and ups flow with their sugary ballads to provide a more even and enjoyable set than their The Best of the Temprees’ compilation. – Andrew Hamilton
