Secondi-ish album

timabouttown

This is a re-release of The Turtles' second album in its original mono mix (first 12 tracks), as well the stereo mix. The album is named for the band's second and third charting hits (the first being It Ain't Me Babe). In the middle of this record is a single originally done by this band in its previous incarnation, The Crossfires (released an album under that name)-- a habit they would continue, updating some Turtles material as Flo & Eddie. Before The Crossfires, they were (briefly) The Nightriders. They did a lot of surf music then, which you hear more than folk here- along with some pointed social commentary, and the great line, "I can't stand to be understood." The Turtles were actually very diverse, especially highlighted on Battle of the Bands. So no, only the two minor hits here, but taken on its own terms, a solid mid-60s pop record that would have been a highlight in virtually anybody else's discography.

On their second album, You Baby, The Turtles stuck to the same brand of sunny, commercial folk-rock as their debut. It’s pleasant fare, but hardly in the same league as the Byrds, Lovin’ Spoonful, or the Mamas & the Papas, and the group’s original material is spotty and sometimes awkward. The best cuts are the ones penned by the Barri/Sloan songwriting team, including the hits “You Baby” and “Can I Get to Know You Better.” This release also includes Let Me Be. – Richie Unterberger
