Excellent 90s Alt Rock

joncwriter

An extremely strong album from these boys, not a bad track on it. Easily one of my top 10 favorite albums of the 90s. Well worth picking up.

Solid Alt/Rock

These guys are great. I hadn't heard them in a while and was glad to find their albums here on eMusic. I grew up in the same area of Michigan where they really got their start and they were huge on campus for several years. Aside from the obvious hits, Reverend Girl and Veneer are my favs.

Their best tracks are on this record. I really like villians and the photograph.

awesome.

this band is so underrated. mostly known for "the freshmen", but the other tracks on this album are far better in my opinion. "cup of tea", "penny is poison", and "ominous man" are picks. worth the whole download though, especially since you get 1 track free.

They Say All Music Guide

The Verve Pipe made their major-label debut under the direction of producer Jerry Harrison with Villains, recasting themselves in the inauspicious mold of a post-grunge act. On an initial listen, the album does little to distinguish itself from the masses, though patient revisiting reveals a band of more depth, with Brian Vander Ark’s songwriting improving vastly over previous albums and more subtle aspects, like the tasteful organic keyboard arrangements, actually adding texture and dimension to the sound. The band seemed to acknowledge the misstep by re-recording (yet again) “The Freshmen” for single release and subsequent pressings, which ultimately earned them their first national hit. – Chris Woodstra
