Swim, the first album on golden-voiced Gillian Welch's label Acony, has an effortless charm. Full of breezy folk-rock, the album dips and sways with high harmonies and unfussy arrangements. Swim's highlights tend to rise from the looser tunes: check the shuffling, mega-catchy "Old Times" and the swingin 'shakedown "Lock and Key." It all comes together, though, on the closing track "Mountain." A midtempo sway, it features a staggering lead vocal that barely holds key — a precarious moment, but one that proves Whispertown can tug on your heartstrings, without even pulling that hard.
