Promising Debut

Returning

Checking out Thoms discography it was no surprise to find this was his debut release in 1987. Mountains has much to commend it; but for my money the most promising passages are those that allude to his subsequent ventures such as Beneath Clouds and Mist (Trk 8: Monsoon for example). Not sure what Matt Borghi means by “most ambient offering thus far” – it all depends on your definition of ambient but I would say that this work is the least ambient of Brennans albums represented here as the pieces are more melody focussed than atmospheric.

Must have

Demiurgo

I think Brennan is one of the finest ambient authors of all times. A true artist, and a synthesist. In "Mountains", you can actually feel and almost see the presence of nature, rising from the rhythmic synth textures.

My God!...It's full of Stars!...

Breath taking sounds... Mind boggling soundscapes... I can identify Brennan's works as a True Labour of Love. The hypnotic sounds of his music are ideal for "travelling" and "silent observing".

Good stuff.

Circumambient

If you ignore tracks 1 and 3, this album ranks among the rest of Brennan's top-notch ambient works (his greatest being BENEATH CLOUDS). It reminds one of Jalan Jalan's ambient classics BALI and BALI DUA with less "world" overlay.

They Say All Music Guide

Thom Brennan’s Mountains is one of the finest and most ambient offerings that Thom Brennan had made thus far. Thom Brennan’s Mountains explores deep and profoundly resonant sonic atmospheres that evoke the beauty of moonlight shining down upon a mountainous peak as one watches from miles away. This is an excellently consonant recording and one that is firmly based in the sounds of beautiful synthesizer music, along the lines of Steve Roach’s quieter stuff, including Quiet Music-Complete and The Dream Circle. This recording is interesting because it’s as if all of the sequenced beats and drumming have been removed from Thom Brennan’s beautiful work and listeners are left instead with these slowly evolving sonic timbres. In places Thom Brennan’s sequenced rhythms do come into play, but they are not as prominent as they are in some of his other works. Mountains is a fantastic recording, and one that is very accessible to fans of space, new age, electronic, and ambient music alike. This is a great recording, and one that is highly recommended. – Matt Borghi
