Tim Maia wasn’t in America for very long — he studied for a few years and was then deported, either for possession of marijuana or for his involvement with a stolen car — but he soaked up a lot of soul music during that brief time. When he returned to Brazil and began writing songs and performing, he soon became one of Brazil’s most soulful voices. The Soul of Brazil is a targeted compilation of Maia’s highlights during the roughly dozen-year period stretching from the beginning of the ’70s into the early ’80s. It may be brief at only 13 tracks, but it hits virtually all of the best songs of his peak period, beginning with 1969′s “These Are the Songs” and extending to 1983′s “Me Dê Motivo.” Highlights include “Réu Confesso,” “Azul Da Cor Do Mar,” and “Vocé,” all with laid-back summery vibes no matter the arrangement (horn charts, strings, or the grand symphonic feel of both). – John Bush
