Brightly Painted One
Hollie Fullbrook writes beautiful poetic songs about relationships and domestic life. Her guitar playing is clever and a great accompaniment, but an additional highlight is the glorious understated playing by a cast of musicians. I adore the double bass on "Me at the museum..." and the many other subtle backing sounds. Standout tracks are "Me at the museum..." and "Straw into Gold" which transform the day-to-day dramas of relationships into the realm of magic and fairy tales. Is this magical realism in music? I have no idea, but this is definitely my album of the year from 2014.
