The Elements
Definitely a fun song.
Definitely a fun song.
This is the album that first introduced me to Tom Lehrer in the 1970s, courtesy of my then boyfriend. Although I had heard some of his music previously through widely separated channels, I did not realize it was all the same artist until I heard this album. I later went on to collect as many of his albums as I could, all on vinyl, of course. Now I'm collecting them again, digitally, because my collection is not complete without as much Tom Lehrer as I can get. "An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer" is a good introduction to Lehrer's work, and I plan to play these tracks for my partner and my friends who just seem to have missed out on this somehow!! I wish eMusic also had "That Was the Year That Was", which has some truly biting songs.
When I was introduced to Tom Lehrer's musical social commentary in college, it was already 15 years old. Now I've hooked my teenage son on him! About half of his songs are just irreverent fun, but the rest are social commentaries that are as relavent now as in the 60's and 80's. That in itself is a social commentary - when are we going to do something about the issues he brings up?
