So bad it's...perfect

If you've ever listened to Dr. Demento, no doubt you've heard Tony Burrello's truly demented classic here. But the real "finds" for me here are the two cuts by Leona Anderson, who once billed herself as "The World's Most Horrible Singer" and actually had a career in the 1950s. Here two songs here actually get semi-regular play even today on the Sirius Radio Network's comedy channels, and well they should. "Fish" actually got a bit of airplay thanks to Ernie Kovacs, who used it as a recurring gag, and the flip, "Rats in My Room," is just downright funny. Incidentally, the musicians accompanying Ms. Anderson on "Fish" are Burrello and puppeteer Bil Baird! You need these, you want these, download 'em now!

The best song ever written

The Ring Cycle, Gurre Lieder, Ode to Joy, Ein Deutsches Requiem: they all sound like fingernails on a blackboard compared to this, the magnum opus of humanity, "The Sound of Worms". If you do not listen to it once in your life the Almighty will forever label you as a Philistine.

Bloody Marvellous

Wondermouse

The only thing I know about this fantastic track is that the Muppets did a version on their TV show. It's amazing, stunning, and a must for kids! You'll probably know it when you hear it!

This LP was the very first release by the Stash label and, as with its first dozen or so collections, it features vintage material that deals with illicit subject matter. Many of the best marijuana and drug-based recordings are on this set including Stuff Smith’s “Here Comes the Man with the Jive” (which features some hot Jonah Jones trumpet), Trixie Smith’s “Jack I’m Mellow,” Barney Bigard’s “Sweet Marijuana Brown” (which has Art Tatum on piano), Andy Kirk’s “All the Jive Is Gone” and Harry “The Hipster” Gibson’s classic “Who Put the Benzedrine in Mrs. Murphy’s Ovaltine?” Other performers include Cab Calloway, Benny Goodman, Buster Bailey, Sidney Bechet, the Harlem Hamfats, Chick Webb and Clarence Williams. Some of this material has since been reissued on CD but the original set is still the best. – Scott Yanow
