Dreamtime electronica with amazing pull and staying power
Label: Ghostly International / IODA

With electronic dance music in 2011 perennially on the verge of crossing over into bigger arenas, it makes sense that this year’s albums mirror the moment. But Tycho’s Dive is less a bid for major stardom than for the indie rock kind, and he earns it without looking back. Dive crosses a lot of parallel streams — chillwave, the “idylltronica” of Boards of Canada, ’80s-plastic-synth revivalism, the Jan Hammer-soundtrack throwbacks of Studio (see the eight-plus-minute “Dive”), the lambent side of early rave as refracted through the work of Lone, dusty breaks a la Mo’ Wax — in one easy go, summing up those styles’ strong points with tightly-arranged songs. Even the stuff that seems to fall out of the speakers like dew off leaves has some pace, as with the sparkling, mush-mouthed guitar that guides “Daydream” over its slow-rolling breakbeat. File it alongside Caribou’s Swim and Four Tet’s There Is Love in You as dreamtime electronica with amazing pull and staying power.

Discover Tycho.

My first Tycho experience - certain not to be the last. Blend shoegazing and Washed Out, and you have Tycho - background music you'll love. Highly recommended.

This year's dream.

One of those electronic albums that feel compelling with a total absence of vocals. RIYL Boards, Caribou, Aphex, or even Vangelis. If not for the slightly anthemic tempos on most tracks, it could be the next Boards of Canada release, but it's so well done that it escapes being (purely) derivative. Great driving music.

Who Is…Tycho

By Michelangelo Matos, eMusic Contributor

When Scott Hansen moved to San Francisco for college in 1995, he was a rock fan. "I was listening to Megadeth and the Doors and Led Zeppelin when I came out here," he says. Soon, he met some school chums who played him some electronic/dance staples: LTJ Bukem and Roni Size and DJ Shadow. When he finished school, he moved to Sacramento, where he got involved with a local IDM scene with ties to the… more »

They Say All Music Guide

The transcendental soundscapes of San Francisco’s Scott Hansen sparkle and shine in Tycho’s first Ghostly release. The San Francisco graphic designer/electronic musician stays dedicated to the musical styles of Boards of Canada and Ulrich Schnauss, with liquid keyboards drizzled over gentle beats, but as the popularity of chillwave continues to increase, these types of hazy meditations are as relevant as ever. When the airy vocals of Jianda Johnson are introduced in the title track, Hansen’s warm mellow grooves fall right in line with groups like Small Black, Neon Indian, and M83. Additional live instrumentation — provided by guitarist Zac Brown and bassists Dusty Brown and Matt McCord (on “A Walk” and “Ascension”) — makes Dive more multidimensional than 2004’s Sunrise Projector or 2006’s Past Is Prologue. Likewise, it’s his most downtempo effort, and all that much more soothing and captivating. – Jason Lymangrover
