Ulver still scares me but that is okay.

First off Wars of the Roses is a borderline masterpiece. The scope of sound sculpting on this record is nothing short of astonishing (this is another great headphone record). Wars Of The Roses also features a fantastic pretty straightforward rock song "February MMX. Wars of the Roses upon initial listening still continues with Ulver's theme of documenting the end of an era in human existence (and maybe the end of the human race which is an argument I am not totally sure of) Moody, scary, dark, with a bit more optimism than "Shadows of the Sun" Still a pretty pitch black record in terms of mood but what a beautiful dark mood they have created(yet again) Recommended if you like Anathema, Coil, The Gathering and Opeth among others. I did want to say with Kscope releasing this great album and last years Anathema's "We're Here Because We're Here(my favorite album by far last year) this label is quickly turning into one of the great labels (like 4ad was in the eighties and early 90s)

Back to form... whatever Ulver's form is

As with every Ulver album, it's never what I expect, but it's always good. If you were disappointed with Ulver's stripped down sound on Shadows of the Sun, then this album is a return to form of the multilayered electronic roller-coaster Ulver has been known for since branching out from their black metal roots. I'd place the sound on this album closer to Blood Inside. Headphones and attention are required to fully enjoy the album. This is an excellent album that, while not reaching the level of sheer magic of Perdition City, is still a very good ride.
