Grandpa Zappa Likes It

Margaritakinglives

I keep thinking of Zappa when I hear this music. They could be his grandchildren for what they sound like. Good stuff and definitely not your standard FM radio fare.

The place to start

downingcr

If you've never heard this band before, get this album. It is quite simply amazing. Then, once you've had a listen, proceed to their live material and skip over the rest of their studio albums, which for some reason never come close to being this good again. Their live show is where its at, and this album is the template for the show.

Best Umphrey's By Far

JamBass

Man this album is by far the best of umphrey's. It's loose and jammy with some really good songs, great solo's, sweet grooves and excellent melodies. Anchor drops is pretty good too (some great songs and some duds), but safety in numbers is mostly duds if you're a jamband fan (mabe you'll like it if you're primarily a rock fan). Can't say anything about bottom half cuz i don't own it.

Best Album ever!!!

LittleBird

With a beautifully diverse playlist, and far less vocals than recent albums, this is by far their best. It's what really got them off the ground. On "Local Band Does OK" they are still the modest prodigies that amaze, something I think they have lost since seeing bigger crowds and stages in more recent years. It really captures their early potential. My favorite song of theirs is on this album, "Nothin Too Fancy," a smooth and exhilirating audible trip. This ablum is more than OK, it's and an Umphreys MUST!

They Say All Music Guide

The material on Umphrey’s McGee’s first studio album, Local Band Does O.K., is progressive in the sense that — like early Phish — it places an emphasis on complexly interlocking, deftly executed instrumental parts. It is music that is obviously challenging to play and seems to make a point in reveling in itself, though it is decidedly not challenging to the listener. There is little dissonance or sonic experimentation. That said, the band’s sprawling excursions, which flip between arranged and improvised, are quite enjoyable. There is an easygoing, expansive quality to the band’s melodies, which certainly don’t rush, but don’t quite feel vital or emotional either. Though the band is occasionally supplemented by a trumpet or an alto saxophone and a few acoustic guitars turn up in the mix, there is really little to suggest that Local Band Does O.K. is little more than what the band’s live performances are like. The music mixes the usual jam band influences: progressive rock, Latin grooves, hints of electronic beats, funk, jazz fusion, and humor. For those who prefer the Frank Zappa strain of jam bands to the funk or Americana approaches, Umphrey’s McGee are fine exemplars of the style, and Local Band Does O.K. is a solid, straight-up document of that. – Jesse Jarnow
