Absolutely beautiful sound

EMUSIC-0199A586

I always thought of Vanessa Daou as the white version of Sade. Her music is the perfect blend of contemporary jazz, electronica, and dance, with some slow and some upbeat songs. It will chill you out and uplift you at the same time. Zipless came out 15 years ago, but still sounds fresh today. Love it!

Electronic Erotica

Laylavoce

Revisiting Zipless reminded me how effectively Daou interpreted Jong's poetry. If left to a man's sole devices, this would have been musical porn as opposed to classy, sultry erotica. Sorry to say, Jong's own voice was jarring compared to Daou's softer coos. Great album to hear with your artist/musician friends over wine.

A Masterpiece!!

Tuned-in

A beautiful, complex, and moody, compilation of Erica Jong poems. It took listening to the entire CD a few times before I really got it, now it is one of my all time favorites. Perfect for one of those lazy, artsy, jazzy late Friday nights.

sexy, raw, enveloping

To put the poetry of Erica Jong to jazzy, deep house creates a lush, smokey, and internal dance club for one. Whispered lyrics brush against your neck, and a jazzy piano trickles up your spine. The music wraps you in velvet, while the poetry draws you to a feminine awakening.

They Say All Music Guide

Working with husband and longtime collaborator Peter Daou, Zipless is the poetry of Erica Jong set to music (all of it played, arranged, and produced by Peter Daou, who happens to be Jong’s nephew). Musically, the arrangements are often sparse and ambient, giving Vanessa Daou plenty of space to deliver the words in either spoken form or with slinky, seductive vocals. It’s an approach that is a almost flawless, allowing the listener to drift along as Vanessa breathily offers up the provocative memories on “Sunday Afternoons” or weaves her way through the hushed, evocative “My Love Is Too Much.” Jong herself gives the reading of “Smoke,” with some vocals added by Vanessa. Other noteworthy tracks include the inviting opener “The Long Tunnel of Wanting You,” which simmers with an airy, percussive melody, and the hypnotic, wispy “Near the Black Forest.” Zipless is a breathtaking trip that can barely contain its own sensuality. – Tom Demalon
