A smart, sexy, confident and inspired fusion of dance and world music
2000 | Label: Blue Flame / The Orchard

This fine compilation samples female artists from lands as diverse as Spain, Uzbekistan, and Zimbabwe, but it's not traditional world music — instead, the selections tend towards the modern-minded and the dance floor-friendly. Generally, this means a smart, sexy, confident and inspired fusion that often roams across myriad cultures in the course of a single cut. Best selections include "Nana," which features Indian/British vocalist Sheila Chandra's ethereal voice framed by drones; the anthemic "Amaria," featuring four silky-voiced soloists (Lucilla Galeazzi, Yiota Vei, Equidad Bares and Hayet Ayad) performing under the name Mammas; and the duo Vas '"Ningal," in which the beguiling voice of Iranian-American singer Azam Ali is interwoven with hypnotic drumming by American percussionist Greg Ellis. This is an enticing selection, not to mention a fine gateway to world music.

tracks to download

Montagu

Select downloads. I love "Caravan" -- great rhythm with guitar, and female lyrics about -- guess what? -- a caravan! What a unique melody line & things she does with her voice. Toe tapping. ... I also enjoy "Ningal- Vas" for the interesting melodies overlapping with the hand drumming to support it. And if you came here for the delicious voices, go for "Nana" by Sheila Chandra... you'll recall the Lord of the Rings sequences with the elves moving slow-mo in the mist.

I wish I would have read the reviews before downloading Sensual Woman....ick! ~ Otherwise, there are some nice songs on here. Three stars.

almost all good!

Vespathekid

I left off 12, 16. So far with just the samples this is a wonderful collection. Will alter review after full listen if necessary. Great stuff!

Some very good

MikesEgo

Amaria rocks. Ningal and Nana are beautiful. Warning: Herbalizer's Sensual Woman is not a song, just annoying talking with background music.

Nice selection

scrhythm

I've downloaded and enjoyed several of these tracks but "Kaybettik Biz" by Candan Ercetin (from Turkey) is a standout - infectious rhythm, alluring vocals, eastern flavor. Pity eMusic can't offer more of her music.

Certainly great voices

dhaun

I came across this record when looking for Anne Clark. That was during the last days of the old (unlimited) plan and I didn't manage to download all the songs then (because the servers were swamped). I'm glad I came back for the rest, as there are some nice tunes (and strong voices) on this one. Personal favourites: "Caravan", "Kaybettik Biz". Also check out this unusual version of "Golden Brown".
