guilty pleasure covers

EMUSIC-01DE777C

I love Devendra Banhart and it's great to hear him covering a band I also love but I wouldn't consider Oasis a guilty pleasure band. Journey on the other hand i'm not as quick to profess my love outloud.. and Petra Haden's cover is right on. Not every track is amazing but overall this album is very entertaining. You'll catch yourself singing along to songs you didn't think you knew.

Is this a joke?

Just wondering. (OK, the Petra Haden and Concretes tracks work, but the rest...Why?)

Get the Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Goat Luna tracks. They're fantastic.

hard to admit, but journey rocks

All my friends make fun of me, both because of the size of my package and because (although otherwise I'm on the cutting edge of music), I still love Journey. Well, I gotta say Petra Haden's version of Don't Stop Believing is pretty darn cool. You can take it ironically or at face value; either way it's great. Now if I could just get Scala & Kolacny Brothers to do a version. Sigh.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy

WAS on eMusic, for about two months, but his record label decided you're not worth their time. Unfortunately, the songs by him on this comp aren't his best - The "Don't Stop Believing" cover is GOLD, though!

decent comp, but...

...eMusic shouldn't get away with having this as the only record in their annals to feature Will Oldham/Bonnie "Prince" Billy. "Can't Take That Away" is about the least representative Oldham song imaginable. Note to eMusic - I don't know what you have to do to get I See a Darkness, Master and Everyone and The Letting Go on here, but you've gotta get on that.

Feeling Guilty About Posting This

I'm a big fan of cover songs (not live). When done right by the right artist, it can be quite a transformation for a song. Case in point - Luna's version of "Straight Up" (Paula Abdul), Goat's version of {gulp} Fall Out Boy's "Sugar We're Going Down", and Devendra Banhart & Noah Georgeson's version of Oasis' "Don't Look Back in Anger." These are the premium cuts on the album. Other songs, I just wasn't familiar with (ala High School Musical or Take That (sorry, just not familiar). Part of it is nostalgia, the other part is hearing a good band or act like Superchunk or Mike Watt redo a song they would never have considered playing when the song was popular. Definitely a solid download for fans of indie rock cover songs. Petra Haden does a killer version of "Don't Stop Believing." It's a better way to remember The Sopranos than that Journey version...
