David Byrne’s musical love letter to Brazil.
Label: Luaka Bop

Beleza Tropical was Luaka Bop's first release, a collection of prime 70's-era Brazilian tracks. Originally compiled by Byrne as a cassette for his friends, the album is surprising for what it isn't. At the time, Byrne was the hippest guy in the room, known for taking what seemed a detached, ironic stance and looking at life sideways. Beleza Tropical was neither ironic, detached nor particularly strange, just a genuine love letter to a culture Byrne had nothing but affection for. And it wasn't put together for hipsters or know-it-alls, but unashamedly presented some of the best known and best-loved tracks by some of Brazil's best artists: “Terra” by Caetano Veloso, “Anima” from Milton Nascimento, “Umbabarauma” from Jorge Ben, “Caixa de Sol” from the less celebrated Navare Pereira. Nearly twenty years on, it's still the best collection of 70's Brazilian songs you're likely to find.

Re-Purchase Album? WTF?

Hubcap

Let's see, I've purchased this album 3x already - first on vinyl, then on cd, and once on emusic - and, now that my hard drive crashed, I have to purchase it again after all the changes? Whack.

Super collection

Bummydavis

This has long been one of my favorite albums (and it's nice that I was able to get the extra tracks that weren't on the vinyl edition.

A must-have

townleybomb

Mostly smooth and polished, but charming and quirky stuff, mostly from the 70's. 1, 3 and 6 are my faves, but all of these are worth having.

Timeless!

It doesn't matter if you understand Portuguese or not. This collection is infinitely repeatable. You can sing along to it, whistle along to it, hum to it, tap your feet to it, have fun to it! No superlative is too superlative for this collection of wonderful music.

Agree that this is a superior compilation. Song #1 is a terrific opener but the record really seems to hit its stride through the sequence from cuts #9 through #13.

Best tropicalia compilation you could hope for

itazura

This is a brilliant compilation and a wonderful introduction to Brazil's tropicalia movement for the uninitiated. I bought this when it came out on LP years ago and it was a real eye-opener for me. Led to many new Brazilian discoveries and years of listening pleasure. The entire Luaka Bop label is worth exploring -- I'd recommend, in particular, all the Tom Ze and Shoukichi Kina stuff.

Great compilation

Lenslad

This is a wonderful Brazilian compilation put together by David Byrne (of Talking Heads fame). If you even slightly enjoy Brazilian or world music, you must have this in your collection. Most songs are great.

Luaka Bop

By Brian Cullman, eMusic Contributor

Let's face it, the name "Luaka Bop" didn't sound all that promising, especially as no one could quite remember whether the name came from a Brazilian tea or an African condom. And given that David Byrne was a big-time multi-tasker — directing films, collaborating with Twyla Tharp, Robert Wilson and Bernardo Bertolucci, curating art shows, not to mention making his own albums — it was hard to imagine that this new label was more than… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Brazil Classics, Beleza Tropical is the first in a series compiled by Talking Heads singer David Byrne that preceded the big wave of interest in Tropicalia during the late ’90s by almost a decade. Performers include such influential Brazilian figures as Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Jorge Ben, with several songs from each. The selected recordings span the 1970s and ’80s, also including tracks from Milton Nascimento, Nazare Pereira, and more. The liner notes feature the original lyrics as well as their English translations. – Joslyn Layne
