fabulous forro

mcwittmann

What a great style of music. It's got weaving rhythms, fast paced accordion patterns to get you up and moving, and a general sense of smiling. It makes you happy to listen to. Why not dance? Your feet know how to find the beat, and you can bop along however you wish. Yes, there are real dances, and they are awesome and fun, but who cares how to do it right? Just do it, just join in the party, and smile.

Another Great Collection from Luaka Bop

D_House

A solid collection of Brazilan forro, the country music from the dry Northeast of the country. The most famous purveyor of the genre is the legendary Luiz Gonzaga, who is covered here in three excellent tracks, including the opener with it's killer electric guitar. His son, Gonzaguinha, is also included here, performing Gonzaga's classic Asa Branca. Also not to be missed are the Jackson do Pandeiro cuts. Forro is party music of, for, and by the people, meant to make you dance after a long week of work. Download and enjoy.

They Say All Music Guide

When David Byrne first visited the Salvador/Bahia region in 1986, a new musical form that he never heard before amazed him. Dubbed forro, this dance sound originally hailed from northeastern Brazil, described as “a mixture of ska with polka” by Byrne himself. All of the album’s tracks radiate a strong, positive energy, created in the most part by reggae-ish acoustic guitars, melodic accordions, and never-ending contagious rhythms. And although this musical style could be compared to America’s zydeco sound, forro is intended mainly for parties. Brazil Classics, Vol. 3 was compiled by Byrne himself and features the very best artists and compositions that the genre has to offer. Highlights include Luiz Gonzaga’s excellent opener, “O Fole Roncou” (bordering on funk), Dominguinhos’ laid-back “Querubim,” and the hyper-energetic “Festa do Interior” by Gal Costa. A superb introduction to the exotic style of forro, and highly recommended. – Greg Prato
