Mostly Good Stuff, But...

Palomino-Royalle

Most of this material ranges from good to really good, but beware the last track (The Funky Buzzard) unless you are totally tone-deaf. The sax is so out-of-tune that I find it literally painful.Ye gods! Ignore the last one (or enjoy it if you can) and you'll have a worthwhile album for a bargain price.

Talk about the real deal! I was down to 1 DL left but when I heard the samples from this I purchased a booster pack and took the whole thing (an incredible bargain at 12 credits). If you love old school funk like I do this find is a no-brainer,just dl the whole thing!! 5 stars

Oh yeah - this stuff is the funk. Every track is a sure shot to rock the party. If you liked this I suggest you check out the Funk Drops compilations from Warner. Ohh yeah funk.

A MUST HAVE!

bltwooddseven

This is the stuff that dreams are made of. If you haven't d/l'd this or "Cold Heat" yet, get out from under that rock! I just found out that Stone's Throw has re-released this comp using ORIGINAL master tapes instead of old 45s. Check out their website for up to the minute info.

Can't stop movin'

stglaw

Before there was Afrika Bambaataa and Kool Herc, there was this stuff. Man, this shit is hot! Not a single weak song on this disc. Great variety too! THESE are the roots of hip hop!

R&B, Funk Styles, and a Bunch of Soul

baconfats

DL them all. Not a weak nugget in the bunch. Splattered horns, honkin' bass lines, splintered drums, all shot through with funky soul!

They Say All Music Guide

This outstanding collection of funk singles compiled by Stones Throw Records includes 16 songs recorded between 1968 and 1974 by obscure underground groups from America. One of the strongest crossover funk labels of the last decade, Stones Throw pays due respect to modern music’s forgotten grandfathers on this most grooving recorded history lesson of impeccable quality. Anchored by the Highlighters’ classic “The Funky 16 Corners,” whereby the Indianapolis group upped the ante in 1969′s craze for bands counting “corners” (read: hit me three times!) by breaking the recorded benchmark with 16, this compilation leans heavily on the James Brown sect and celebrates the lesser-known groups of the genre, who with high talent and low budget put to tape some of the most raw funk ever captured to date. Representative modernist Cut Chemist of Jurassic 5 even gets an interpretation slot with “Bunky’s Pick” on one of two bonus tracks. Every track is essential to the record and every groove a lost gem. An informative 16-page booklet with full-color photos is included. – Nic Kincaid
