2 Sides of Prokofiev

ProgNClassicaLover

The first 20 tracks of this big, big package would no doubt be the \"best of Prokofiev\" in the unassailable opinion of Josef Stalin. This is the \"commie side\" of Prokofiev, writing what Stalin wanted and expected. These pieces are seldom heard in the west, but interesting to hear nonetheless. The last 30 tracks are the populist Prokofiev, early works when he was trying to make a name for himself, or when he came back to the Soviet Union after his foray with the western avant garde (who never thought he was all that anyway). These works are mostly familiar, although \"Peter and the Wolf\" is without a narrator, befitting a Soviet recording which would otherwise no doubt be in Russian. The sound is that big, course, unsubtle \"Soviet Sound\" that seems to fit this kind of music. Incidentally, the pianist in the concerto is Manana Daidzhashvili. The conductor of tracks 1-12 is Alexander Titov, and 13-20 and 37-50 is Stanislav Gorkovenko. All in all, this is fascinating listening.
