There are a couple of songs towards the end that remind me why I was so looking forward to Maury Yeston's take on this mystical story, but for the most part it is leaden and earthbound -- in particular Death's jaunty major-key ruminations on life. Rebecca Luker is totally wasted, and her only moment, a melancholy ballad about Roberto, is totally done in by banal lyrics. In fact, the lyrics throughout are thuddingly obvious. I love Nine, Titanic, December Songs and much of Phantom. When I saw the dreary production, I was hoping the score would reveal hidden beauties. Unfortunately it reveals the composer-lyricists limitations.
