Various Artists, I Hate CD's: Norton Records 45 RPM Singles Collection Vol. 1
2007 | Label: Norton Records / The Orchard

For close to two decades, NYC's Norton Records has played a key role in rescuing the distinctly American artform of greasy, trashy rock from extinction. I Hate CDs is a 3-CD set (I know, I know) culled from forty-five 45s put out by the label. It features artists that span the decades, from yesteryear up to today; it also serves as a comprehensive document of what this label — and this music — are all… read more »

Lots of great stuff for the price

silverskid

A mixed bag of Norton sides and reissues ranging from lost gems from the 60s to fairly recent retro garage bands. The price here is compelling, and they threw in a few classics like Ramones, Screamin' Jay, Big Star and one of the good tracks from The Dictators (2000) "comeback" album. Like most similar grab bags of this sort, there's a lot of mediocre garage filler (vintage and retro) here along with the gems. For single track hunters I personally recommend Screamin' Jay's "I Hear Voices" (great mix and longer than others I've heard; Roy Loney & The A Bones' "Stop it Baby" (Loney was the original frontman for Flamin' Groovies); Andre Williams' hillarious "The Monkey Speaks His Mind"; and 5,6,7,8's "Harlem Shuffle". As for some better known tracks (if youdon't have them elsewhere) those by the Dictators, Big Star ,Ramones, Question Mark & Mysterians,Link Wray and Mary Weiss' (of Shangra La fame) 2006 single are all, imo, worth having.

Punk and Crude!! And that is a good thing!

Dipsy

Some nice music to get your heart pumping on a slow hot night! Well worth it.

If Hell had an AM station, this is the music the Devil would play on his air shift. Simply great stuff here that offers raw, unvarnished rock & roll that's not afraid to show it's blues and country origins while pointing toward a punk future. Guess where my month's D/L's just went?

well...

This is the only place on the entire site to find many of these artist (ie. Ramones), so I guess I better take what I can get....

forget Nuggets and Pebbles

danidubdub

this is the real deal, like the man said, this is the music we were warned about. As a Gaz's Rockin Blues & Cramps fan, this set is chock full of crazy tunes. I've just downloaded about 2 thirds of it and I am loving it!

I Love 45's

mrush

I hate to ask the obvious question of the two reviewers who had a problem with the "old" sound, but... if you were looking for shiny, polished production quality, why throw your chips in for a compilation of 45's called, "I Hate CD's"? If you really do hate CD's, then you'll love this--it's the Popeye of music--it is what it is.

I Love "I Hate ..."

Robotclaw

This is the devil’s music, the evil jungle sounds the preachers and the White Citizens’ Council originally warned us about — dangerous-sounding stuff that leads to juvenile delinquency, sex, miscegenation, and eventually to an eternity in hell. Much of the material is from the ’50s and ’60s, but it’s far too unrefined for oldies radio. Not that its lyrics are obscene; most of the artists here don’t need to use dirty words to sound outright filthy. old

kingkiss

the sound is poor, because some of the stuff is just very old and the newer stuff sounds that bad cause they wonna sound old ;-) it`s garage sound.

Where did they record this...in a closet?? Sorry, can't handle the "muddy sound quality". Best to move on...unless there's something here you might consider classic?!?!?!?!
