They Say All Music Guide

The music on this intriguing CD can be considered jazzy blues or blues-oriented jazz. The 24 performances are all quite obscure, featuring singer David Cross with Thomas’ Devils, the Scare Crow (Willie Owens), Ike Smith & His Chicago Boys, Connie McLean’s Rhythm Boys, and the Four Southerners (a group patterned after the Mills Brothers). The better-known sidemen include clarinetist Arnett Nelson, banjoist Ikey Robinson, bassist Bill Johnson, and cornetist Punch Miller; with the exception of the Connie McLean date (cut in New York), all of the music was recorded in either Chicago or Richmond, Indiana. Although not classic, the performances (from 1929-1930 and 1935-1937) are mostly quite fun and should interest vintage blues, trad jazz, and small-group swing collectors. – Scott Yanow
