Kai Eckhardt

Just download his track (Track #8 on Disc #1). The rest can go F itself. Trashy, simpering, easy cheez diaper rash nonsense the rest of it. And even Kai's track could use with some synth censorship. Too bad. His playing is beautiful and elegant. He is one of only a tiny handful of bass players in the improvisational music scene today who come even close to resembling a shadow of Jaco's musical legacy. And he doesn't even use that talent of his to its fullest potential. Cryin' shame that is.

So good, some not so good

It's not an easy task to take on the compositions of such a unique group as Weather Report. Unlike many groups of this time period, the "Weather Report" sound was just as much a result of the compositions themselves as it was the playing styles of the individuals involved. The 24 artists in this set take up that challenge with varying degrees of success. Some of the tracks sound more or less like verbatim repeats of the original tracks ("Fever"). Others take a completely deconstructionist tack (the acoustic guitar duo take of Birdland). Probably the most common technique used is to replace the usual Weather Report instrumentation with electric guitars and horns. The most successful tracks for me are the gently swinging, lacey version of "Three Views of a Secret", the acoustic Piano-Bass treatment of "A Remark You Made and Jim Beard's widely inventive, sampled, synth'ed romp through "Fever". All in all a more or less successful tribute to one of the great bands bands of all times.

They Say All Music Guide

This double-CD has 24 different groups of fusion musicians (including some from Europe) paying tribute to Weather Report. Despite the personnel and often the instrumentation changing from track to track, there is a unity to the project and many of the bands sound quite a bit like Weather Report, either purposely as part of the tribute or naturally. The programming is somewhat random and the bands bring back the sound, grooves, and spirits of Weather Report rather than necessarily always sticking to their compositions. All in all, this is a heartfelt and very well-played tribute that can also serve as an introduction to a cross-section of some of today’s top fusion musicians, many of whom are not household names yet. – Scott Yanow
