a DSch-10th appointment

no question, this is a remark-able modern production of a fine sounding and even playing with audible passion. I wouldn't care for the complete cycle but would mark this tenth highly.

Best download...?

This is one of the best recent versions of Shostakovich's 10th available to download. In its dedication to the music as written it's reminiscent of Karajan's versions (though I personally prefer the first of his two recordings). All the same, for sheer visceral impact I still think Haitink's version on the LPO label and, above all, Kondrashin, are streets ahead.

Agree with 'Musicdirektor' - a brilliant performance that really bites! This series is stacking up to be one of my favourite Shostakovich cycles. Who'd have thought it?!!

Series keeps getting better!

Here is the latest instalment from a most exciting Shostakovich symphony cycle. It is also chronicling the blossoming relationship between Petrenko and the RLPO. It is obvious from the opening bars that this is to be a gripping and incisive account. The double basses are well recorded, as are all departments in fact. The tam-tam is appropriately present. Tempi are swift, even in the first movement. The scherzo still has the capacity to grab you by the throat! Do not hesitate.
