unbelievable

jasthedrillguy

I was expecting a so-so albulm with a featured soloist. Never did I realize how UNBELIEVABLE Vaugh Nark plays. He is the best screecher I've ever heard. He is far better than Maynard![Ferguson] He has a tone quality to the upper register that you normally do not here by any body human! The version of Cherokee is worth the album alone! One can only wonder how he could possible play that "high". My Funny Valentine is so sweet and fresh.I also really enjoy It could happen To You.

They Say All Music Guide

The undated music on this CD features the remarkable trumpet virtuoso Vaughn Nark with the Airmen of Note, probably from around the 1985-1991 period. Nark is an explosive player who is certainly not shy to hit screaming high notes, so one has to be prepared for his constant blasts. This disc collects together some of his main features with the Air Force big band including “Lorraine,” “Red Clay,” “It Could Happen to You,” “Cherokee,” and even “White Christmas.” Mike Crotty provided the majority of the arrangements, and even though the other musicians are not well known, they are first-class professionals. Since Nark is the star throughout, this is a CD most highly recommended to trumpet students who do not get discouraged too easily! – Scott Yanow
