All about a love story!

MartinW

The stages of a young person's falling in and out of and back into love provide the backdrop for an outstanding set of songs, that grow on you. Yes, Satisfy is a great song, but every song on this album is great, and thematically connected to the rest - if you don't hear the full album, you don't hear the whole, connected story. There isn't a bad song on this album - every one is a jewel in its own right, and taken together it's a theme album in the best sense of the description. Something you can play over and over again and not get tired of hearing. Kristen May-Little's voice is appealing and beautiful. The band is together, and keeps the music going with great harmonies and rhythms. Don't miss this!

Overcorrection

Tarantoga3

Vedera's (then Veda) first full-length disk was gritty and rocky and suffered a tad in the production department. The tunes were solid, but there was nothing like a certifiable hit. "Stages" seeks to correct those shortcomings, but overshot the mark. This disk will have far diminished appeal for the indie market. The songs are short and slick. Vedera's indie-rock sound is pared down to a pop-friendly doppelganger of Sixpence None the Richer. That isn't a totally bad thing, but there are many bands vying to fill the Sixpence niche. This stage for Vedera seems producer-imposed and unnatural.

They Say All Music Guide

With an effervescent yet forceful sound recalling a rockier version of ‘90s adult alternative staples like the Cranberries and Sixpence None the Richer, Vedera — a Kansas City, MO-based four-piece — initially made small waves on the indie circuit in 2006 with the release of their debut, The Weight of an Empty Room. Three years (and a featured song on MTV’s The Hills) later, Vedera is poised for the kind of breakthrough that made the previously mentioned bands household names a decade earlier. The band’s major-label debut, Stages, puts the spotlight on lead vocalist Kristen May’s bright, soaring pipes. And on songs like “Satisfy,” with its shining power chords and gently strummed melodies, May turns in spirited performances that mix reverie and defiance on an equal order. Likewise, the piano- and strings-driven “Even I” seems tailor-made for teen TV drama introspection, ticking all the right emotional boxes with its downcast yet almost cheerfully catchy choruses. – Dave Shim
