A Desert Island Disk

chickenfoof

Picture Bruce Cockburn fronting the Rolling Stones — without either of their respective hubrises getting in the way of the music therein. Insanely articulate, deeply felt and yeah, rocking its greasy-chorded butt off on several occasions, when it’s not quietly ripping your heart out. In Bill Mallonee's own words, this album is both VoL's "garage-band album" and his “testament to despair.” Amidst the poetry (and even a few lighter-hearted moments) there’s plenty of brutal honesty to go around, directed mostly inward. And yet, there is hope. From the unadulterated and explicit connubial bliss of "Love Cocoon" to the pure despair of "Judas Skin" to the undeserved grace of "All the Mercy We Have Found," it's all here. Download now, thank me later.

They Say All Music Guide

Slow Dark Train gives us fourteen cuts, which are all highlights. From the religious overtones of “Judas Skin” and “Love Cocoon” to the folk-rock of “Version of the Truth,” Vigilantes of Love sing songs of experience that come directly from the heart. Nothing here will disappoint, and while lyrics are included, one will soon find themselves singing along without any prompting. – James Chrispell
