Agreed. But better than 3 stars.

Yes, not their best album, but it IS a good one that's aged quite well. It doesn't cut deep, but it's not trying to. It's a "happy" VoL album, channeled via Brit-Pop. "Along for the Ride" and "Happy Being Lonely, Lonely Being Happy," have the requisite amount of VoL bittersweetness to them, though. And regardless of what you think of "Galaxy," you have to admit there isn't another song like it in the VoL/Bill Mallonee pantheon. And "You Know That" and "Puttin' Out Fires" were made to be cranked. Enjoy them for what they are. Mourn for a band that should've been SO much bigger than this. But not before getting Slow Dark Train, Audible Sigh, or Blister Soul.

Good, but not Great. But Free.

This is a very pop sounding album. It's good for what it is, but not the best VOL record in my opinion. However, presently (as of 3/23/07) Bill is giving the record away on his site, http://www.volsounds.com So don't waste downloads on it here. Instead get Audible Sigh or Killing Floor.

They Say All Music Guide

Having released an album nearly every year since coming together, Vigilantes of Love show a remarkable lack of atrophy in either songcraft or musicianship. If anything, the group has learned to do more with less, leader Bill Mallonee contributing some of his most concise songs yet. “Galaxy” is a tender ballad of consolation which Mallonee sings in a weary and loveworn tone. “Stand Beside Me” may be based on a somewhat derivative riff, but “Making It Up” and “You Know That” sound like the perfect marriage of early R.E.M. and any number of good alt-country bands. With tough but engaging riffs and just enough rootsy kick to keep things grounded, Summershine is a bright light of an album. – John Duffy
