Om Shanti Om is by far the most successful and melodically inclusive album by Vishal-Shekhar to date, as Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani stamp their names on the list of top contemporary composers in India. Vishal-Shekhar have met expectations before, but nothing compared to the big-budget Om Shanti Om and they delivered perfectly, pushing their skills to the limit. The pair performs an excellent balancing act, combining beat-heavy tracks like “Deewangi Deewangi,” “Dhoom Taana,” and “Dard-E-Disco” with poignant songs like “Aankhon Mein Teri,” “Main Agar Kahoon,” and “Jag Soona Soona Lage.” The acoustic-heavy “Aankhon Mein Teri” features a gentle melody that lingers in the mind for hours. K.K. provides evocative vocals and Dadlani himself penned the romantic lyrics for this song. Yet the biggest attention-grabber of this entire offering is the dance track “Dard-E-Disco.” With its poetic lyrics giving way to an adrenalin-fueled dance track with an unconventional title, “Dard-E-Disco” has the entire recipe for a blazing performance; it has a typical Vishal-Shekhar sound with heavy beats and loud techno arrangements while catching the pulse of the crowd very well, and is easily the biggest highlight of this exultant album. Vishal-Shekhar finally delivered a soundtrack that could be deemed their signature offering. – Bhasker Gupta
