They Say All Music Guide

Part of an odd though inspired series also featuring string quartet versions of David Bowie and Led Zeppelin classics, this kicks more than the Bowie one by virtue of more energetic arrangements and the playing of a real guitar in front of the strings. Over a powerful rhythm line, “Rockin’ in the Free World” explodes into a wild duet between the guitar and a soaring-to-the-heavens violin solo. “After the Gold Rush” has a weepy, reflective quality, the violin as sorrow-laden as Young’s high-pitched voice. “Harvest Moon” also features an acoustic guitar-like flavor. Songs without the guitar work less effectively and become more repetitive, like many of the songs on the Bowie collection. Inventive and unique, this may be the solution for those who love Young’s songwriting more than his voice. Bob Dylan would seem a ripe target, too. – Jonathan Widran
