Single Alert!

ErikSpringfield

Ok, enough about the song quality. It's SUPPOSED to sound that way. If you can't get past it and hear the amazing melodies underneath, move on. But if you can, "So Bored" could be your single of the year. Fantastic!

the best

meltingboxofcrayons

i've been listening for over 20 years to all sorts of underground music of all sorts and this is gritty and melodic enough to soak the whole room in a heavy dream-like sugary creamy substance i'd consider some of the greatest stuff i've ever heard.

Crappy sound quality

Fancyartist

Some good songs, but the sound is so bad that is makes my head hurt! I don't understand the need to make raw music sound like total crap!

Great performance

ryechild

Nathan puts on a good concert. The live performance has less fuzz and you can hear all of the hooks in his songs. Really talented.

Come on folks

I can't believe people with otherwise good taste in music are dissing this album and this band. "So Bored" alone makes Wavves one of the best new bands around. They may call it shitgaze, but at least somebody is taking shoegaze to the next logical level, all while making music with passion and conviction. A+

Bums me out.

biggray

I love lo-fi and I hate this. The guy's a kid, so I hate knocking him, but c'mon, there is so little songwriting and invention going on here other than making it sound crappy. This bums me out.

The electronica stuff doesn't appeal to me, but "No Hope Kids" is my favorite new single of spring. Also get "Summer Goth," "Beach Demon," and "So Bored." Great low-fi rock songs. I can't believe this guy is only 22!

Great for station wagons!

bengolow

This sounds great in my Buick station wagon. It just feels right.

ouch

I can handle some lo-fi, but this is off the charts. Is it you eMu? Or was this actually recorded to sound like crap?

why ...

does this sound to me like My Bloody Valentine doing so-cal punk? Actually not really at all, but I still love it!

Who Are…PAWS

By Marc Hogan, eMusic Contributor

PAWS released an EP early last year that was mastered by Shellac's Bob Weston, and their scrappily melodic, garage-rock approach wouldn't have sounded out of place on a vintage episode of MTV's 120 Minutes. But drummer Josh Swinney quickly rejects the idea the Scottish trio is part of any kind of '90s revival. "It's just music that young people are making that's evolving," he says. When you consider that similar comparisons have been leveled at… more »

2011: Garage Rock Grows Up

By Mike McGonigal, eMusic Contributor

Four years ago, I flew from Portland to New York to see my favorite band, New Zealand's garage-pop trio the Clean, play three shows at a glorious pit called Cake Shop. The openers were Crystal Stilts, a Brooklyn group with no records out whose moody and noisy music pushed all the right buttons. I quickly befriended the group, especially guitarist JB Townsend and his then-girlfriend Frankie Rose, whose own band Vivian Girls were soon-to-be favorites.… more »

Six Degrees of Wavves’ Life Sux EP

By Austin L. Ray, eMusic Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »

Who Are…Bass Drum Of Death

By Ian Cohen, eMusic Contributor

You can never accuse John Barrett of having his heart in the wrong place when he explains the genesis of what would eventually become Bass Drum of Death: "Basically, the whole purpose of me ever [playing songs] live was because I could get free drinks and make a little money and girls would talk to me. It worked a lot better than if I was just going out normally." Indeed, while their debut LP GB… more »

Interview: Wavves

By Barry Walters, eMusic Contributor

If you've been following Wavves over the course of the last few years, you know that frontman Nathan Williams is famous for unpredictable behavior: Last year he had a meltdown at a Barcelona music festival where, under the combined influence of Ecstasy, Valium and Xanax, he fought with his drummer and insulted a crowd that then pelted him with bottles. Soon after, Williams apologized, and admitted a drinking problem — a confession promptly removed from… more »
