Wes King's Calling Card

GKH

If you regard Wes King solely as a Christian artist, you're sorely missing the mark. Yes, his songs revolve soundly around faith and walking in it; but in my book, he's one of the most overlooked songwriters of the past two decades, period. Common Creed is arguably his high-water mark, rivaled only by 2001's What Matters Most. Although the title cut and "Life Is Precious" are the most immediate, there's not a truly weak cut in the bunch, as this is one of the best CCM releases of the 90's. Fans of Contemporary Christian Music need this for their library, and it's a worthy add for singer/songwriter fans of any genre as well.

They Say All Music Guide

King’s songwriting is much stronger on this release than on previous sets, but he maintains his focus on pop songs with melodic hooks and good musicianship. These songs demonstrate King’s continuing development as a lyricist, as they alternately encourage and challenge listeners to examine and understand their faith. While the ballads are particularly strong, both musically and lyrically, King’s upbeat songs often lack originality. The production serves the songs well with its clean, bright sound, and the arrangements keep the album interesting with repeated listening. Includes the number one hits “Life Is Precious,” “The Love of Christ” (co-written with Michael Card and Michael W. Smith), and the title cut. – Marc Castellani
