A tight, tart dosage of one of the country's more potent psych-rock outfits
2013 | Label: Downtown Records / The Orchard

“Mixed by Jeff Tweedy” is the headline hook for this Texas-based prog-boogie quartet’s sixth album, and you can hear the Wilco frontman’s highly successful formula — classic rock with an avant-garde tinge — all over these tightly wound, reverb-sweating tunes. Where earlier Denim albums often drifted into skronk and sputter, Corsicana Lemonade hews tightly to structure, tipping its spiffy fedora to early Steely Dan in “Come Back,” the Dukes of Stratosphear’s Brit-psych in “Limited By… read more »

Corsicana Lemonade

subrosa

After some excellent, challenging and impressive recordings filled with promise, White Denim delivers a masterpiece. WD were never hard to listen to, and with each LP and EP the songwriting, arrangements and performances improved, often with outstanding results like their last effort, "D." Still, at times the rapid time signature changes and random mid-song shifts were a bit overpowering. This time, everything is right. The guitar work is super complex but melodic, never tiring. The songwriting is stellar. Although the music is still intricate if grooves easily. This is not only WD's most accomplished record; it's the most FUN one. I can't imagine anyone not loving these songs. Corsicana Lemonade is a tight, happy, well-written and well-played album. In short: a damn good time. File under Heavy Rotation and enjoy. Well done, boys.

Six Degrees of Kings of Leon’s Aha Shake Heartbreak

By Yancey Strickler, Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »
