Melancholy haze and life-saving hooks
2010 | Label: Captured Tracks / IODA

To claim that Wild Nothing makes shoegaze music is a bit like saying that Kurt Vonnegut wrote science fiction novels. A dumbed-down, decades-old genre reference doesn't begin to plumb the depths of Gemini, the home-recorded debut by Virginia native and head Wild thing Jack Tatum. While the boy-in-a-bathysphere vocals and overall sonic vertigo-go evoke the misty moors of mid '80s England quite a bit more than Tatum's Blue Ridge Mountains, there is an insistently strummy pop-guitar element to Gemini that makes it a real twin to the Pains of Being Pure At Heart's similarly styled breakthrough. Every time you feel like getting lost in the melancholy haze, Wild Nothing is waiting with a life-saving hook.

The Cure

They sound a lot like them. "Disintegration" era, but modernized. Every song is pretty great. Could leave this CD in my car for a while.

This album takes me to a deep, melancholic euphoria somewhere in an idyllic memory I’ve never had with an idyllic girl I’ll never meet.

bought the limited ed. clear 12" version of this record on the strength of the previous two 7"s. kind of bummed that the LP didn't come with a digital download (get with it, captured tracks), so was glad to see this on emusic the day of release. i will say that after several spins, the b-side is stronger than the a-side, with "chinatown" being the high point of the record. nearly every song is easy mixtape fodder, though...

Nice Drug

Reminds me of The Magnetic Fields and The Durutti Column. Perfectly crafted, and packed full of pretty and compelling hooks. I'm addicted to this album. More so than anything else I've heard in a very long time.

Not terrible, but go buy a record by The Cure first.

dancing 80's style

holy moley. i forgot how good i used to dance in the 80's until Chinatown brought it all back. i'm getting a great Cocteau Twinsy/Felty vibe from the synth, and i love it all. great album.

Album of the year..?

evilpresley

I've had this record near on a month now, and have listened to it almost daily since. Fans of smokey pop ambiance should definitely consider this record, just as those that love the clankiness of Jesus & The Mary Chain / Pains of Being Pure at Heart.

Beautiful, etheral, layered and bright. This is a great release that plays well in June, but even better in January. A must have

Good stuff

Reminds me of old Blondie for some reason, without the female vocals of course. Pitchfork gives it 8.2.

Sounds like Summer!

The single "Chinatown" is clearly the standout track. Wished the rest of the album matched its blissed-out Nouveau Wave greatness. That being said, its still a good (not great) album that will make for some breezy summer 2010 listening.

eMusic's Best Albums of 2010

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

The 80 albums that populate eMusic's Best of 2010 run the stylistic gamut: There's skronking avant-jazz, surf songs for beachside loungers, grinding metal and delicate folk. What unites these records, though, is the personal vision behind each of them. It doesn't matter if the instrumentation employs guitars, djembes, sax or just the human voice — the albums on this list represent a dedication to a personal aesthetic, and the songs are the sound of that… more »

Label Profile: Captured Tracks

By J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief

File Under: Ragged, guitar-based indie pop; jangle-'n'-reverb forever! Flagship Acts: Beach Fossils, Wild Nothing, the Fresh & Onlys, the Girls At Dawn Based In: Brooklyn, New York When I first meet Mike Sniper, he's drinking Patron Silver at an Oyster Bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. From any other record executive, the scene would be typical to the point of almost seeming mundane. But Sniper is the founder of the tiny, ragged Brooklyn indie Captured Tracks, a label that prizes… more »
