Wu Man is a rare musician. She is one of a handful of musicians from China who cam meld ancient Chinese music with modern Western music, defying genres. She has worked with everyone from Bill Laswell to Yo To Ma. She is not merely a virtuoso like Lang Lang, for example, but is experimental and her sound is uniquely Chinese, drawing from an ancient tradition. This album is a perfect example, drawing from Tang dynasty songs, helped by a scholarship, but interpreting them in a uniquely modern way. There is some breathtaking playing on this album, simple yet inimitable.

Both Wu Man and Kronos Quartet are musical wanderers, playing with people from everywhere (England, Africa, India etc.) and listening with as much skill as they play. The music here is as delicate (and as rich) as you will hear anywhere.
