Xiu Xiu has always looked at the darker side of life and this album is no exception, especially when your happy songs say things like, "Chocolate makes you happy as you stick your finger down your throat and push away what's wrong with your life." It follows the trend of Fabulous Muscles (my favorite album, probably) in that it is more accessible, especially with the title track and "This Too Shall Pass Away". But there are some subtle gems on here as well, with "Hyunhye's Theme" and "Impossible Feeling".
these guys get better w/ every album@!
Fabulous Muscles is my favorite Xiu Xiu album, and this is basically just as good. There is real power here, melody, and this unique combination of vulnerability and confidence. If you don't like it at first, let it grow on you--it is not always easy but it is intense and alive.
i think this is jamie's best album in a while... probably since Fabulous Muscles. it's just a shame that the version available here doesn't include the bonus tracks available elsewhere.
