Reaching beyond punk in ways that predated most of their peers
2003 | Label: CAROLINE ASTRALWERKS - CAT

XTC’s second album of 1978 is only marginally less agitated and aggressive than its first. But Go 2‘s tempos are markedly more varied than White Music‘s, and the band is already reaching beyond punk in ways that predate most of their peers: Opening track “Meccanik Dancing (Oh We Go!)” lyrically references the Munich disco sound that would inspire New Romantics like Duran Duran while its jagged syncopations anticipate Gang of Four. Concert favorite “Crowded Room” similarly accelerates ska a year before the Specials hit the U.K. charts. And while both Devo and Talking Heads worked with Brian Eno, the deadpan weirdness of “Battery Brides (Andy Paints Brian)” proves XTC could evoke the producer’s renegade creativity on its own. (Eno — who at one point contemplated joining XTC — admitted as much.) Keyboardist Barry Andrews’s revenge-sex fantasy “My Weapon” is lyrically regrettable, but it does point to the darker mood of his future dance band, Shriekback. Although Go 2 is kindred to its predecessor, its experimental cuts confirm XTC as a band to take chances: The catchiest and most fully realized track, “Are You Receiving Me,” was initially left off the LP.

XTC Go2

PickyMike

I would put Go2 in the top 5 XTC records. Funny Shakespearean title. Upon getting it this time (lost childhood fav), my only problem is the over-reliance on circus and ska rhythms. That makes it a pair with White Music. There are songs on here that are XTC classics like \"Battery Brides\" and \"Jumping in Gomorroh\". You can see the style getting a liitle redundant but these are great versions of their early form and the lyrics are the usual excellent XTC fare.

Strained follow-up to their debut album

KET

This is the sound of a band pulling apart in two different directions. It's pretty clear by the end that keyboardist Barry Andrews was getting bored, and his vocal contributions really grated against those of Partridge and Moulding. The remastered edition added the frantically archetypal single, "Are You Receiving Me", which wasn't originally on the album.

Underrated and possibly their best

DC10

While XTC get their fair share of critical praise, this album is almost universally ignored or dismissed. To my ears, it is far superior to Drums & Wires, which is often cited as one of their best. There is a gleeful sense of experimentation on this album that is rarely heard again (at least under the name 'XTC' and not their alias) which could be on account of brilliantly off-kilter keyboardist Barry Andrews leaving the band after this one, although Partridge and Moulding are doing plenty of bizarre and bizarrely original things here as well.

Icon: XTC

By Barry Walters, eMusic Contributor

Classified as post-punk, power pop, New Wave, art-rock, neo-psychedelia, alternative rock, chamber pop and various combinations thereof, XTC forged a path that inspired many, yet remains utterly unique. In its 22 years of making albums, this ever-changing band from Swindon, England, achieved something musically akin to the Beatles — substantial tunes, kinetic musicianship, social commentary and evolving studio craft — with a fraction of their popularity. Like the Fab Four, this quartet transitioned from being… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Recorded in a rush, less than a year after White Music, Go 2 predictably suffered. The album, while slightly more melodic, reprises much of the quirky, high-energy playing of White Music, but the material is considerably weaker this time out. Aside from a couple of standout tracks like “Mechanic Dancing,” Go 2 is probably most memorable for its witty, word-heavy cover art. – Chris Woodstra
