While hardcore was the vehicle for disenfranchised people to "act their rage," it wasn't until Youth of Today came along that the movement began to articulate a sense of unity and concern. YOT are credited as the flagship band of the "youth-crew" scene, a subculture that sought to further the attributes of straight-edge and focus on positive values instead of the deep-rooted nihilism and misanthropy that marked much of the scene at the time. Frontman Ray Cappo was a galvanizing force, a vessel filled with boundless energy and charisma to burn, and his creative foil, guitarist John Porcelly brought the thrash. YOT are also credited as a fulcrum for the then-burgeoning melodic hardcore movement where crafting songs with melodic lines was as important as breakneck speed.
