Paul Flynn's recordings as DJ Q have an occasional flourish of Detroit techno but mostly rely on tight but vibrant jazzy house. The Glasgow native, part of the city's mid-'90s music renaissance (masterminded by Slam and organized through their combined club/label concern, Soma), began DJing early in the 1990s as a moonlighting gig from his full-time job, hanging suspended ceilings. Moving to production as well by 1994, Flynn recorded for Dance Mania, Glasgow Underground and Filter, combining the emotion of Chicago house but with a tighter, more refined aesthetic learned from Detroit producers like Carl Craig. The 1996 single "We Are One" featured Glaswegian poet William Hall intonating over a solid groove-house base, and the track became a hit on the country's more progressive dancefloors. Flynn's debut album as DJ Q, Face the Music, appeared in late 1997; Twenty Four7even followed in early 2000.

from Wikipedia:

Shollen, better known by his stage name DJ Q, is a Huddersfield born DJ who presents a UK garage mix show on BBC Radio 1Xtra. Teamed with MC Bonez, he is also known for his commercial single, "You Wot!".

Early life

DJ Q states that he got into being a DJ and presenter by buying records when he was young that weren't available at the time on CD. As his collection grew he bought some proper decks and started DJing in his bedroom and slowly progressed to playing at parties and clubs. He studied a BTEC National Diploma in Music Technology which helped his producing skills.

Career

He joined BBC Radio 1Xtra as a presenter in August 2006. He currently hosts a show, airing on that station, on Wednesday mornings between 1am - 4am.

DJ Q released his most successful single to date, with MC Bonez, titled "You Wot!", enterting the UK Singles Chart in 2008 and staying there for 2 weeks, peaking at number 50. It was also a successful release for the bassline dance music genre which entered the mainstream the previous year (DJ Q has also released many singles with MC Bonez which, while not successful in the mainstream charts, are well-regarded within this genre. They are also made available on his Myspace page, as well as YouTube, and he is also known to play them on his radio show). DJ Q's most recent single, called 'Over Me' featuring Brit School graduate Louise Williams, was released nationally on Q Recordings on 23 May 2011.
