All Music Guide:

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York (by way of Boulder, Colorado, where they originally came together in 2006), the avant-pop outfit Chairlift formed for the unusual purpose of crafting music for haunted houses. After finding that their work transcended its original purpose, bandmates Aaron Pfenning, Caroline Polachek, and Patrick Wimberly pulled up stakes and headed east, eventually settling in that most musical of locales -- not to mention one always looking for new and unique ideas -- New York City. Chairlift made a name for themselves during their first two years in the Big Apple, playing shows with similar up-and-comers like MGMT, Yeasayer, and Mixel Pixel while inking a contract with the independent label Kanine. Chairlift's first release on the label, a single entitled "Evident Utensil," featured a remix by the aforementioned MGMT and was a precursor to the group's debut full-length release. Issued in 2008, Does You Inspire You melded the band's space rock influences with a poppy indie aesthetic. The album also received an extra promotional boost when "Bruises" appeared in an iPod commercial. By early 2009, major labels came calling and Chairlift signed to Columbia, which re-released Does You Inspire You that April. Sophomore album Something, recorded in Brooklyn and London over the course of 18 months (and marking the recording debut of Chairlift as a duo of Polachek and Wimberly following the departure of Pfenning), arrived in January 2012, elevating the band's kaleidoscopic pop to a grander scale with assistance from Dan Carey (Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen, La Roux).

Chairlift is an American synthpop duo. Based in Brooklyn, New York, Chairlift consists of members Caroline Polachek (songwriting, vocals, synthesizer, drum programming, arranging) and Patrick Wimberly (drums, bass guitar, keyboard, guitar, backing vocals, production).

Chairlift formed initially as a project between Aaron Pfenning and Caroline Polachek at the University of Colorado in October 2005. The group intended to make background music for haunted houses. Along with bassist Kyle McCabe, Chairlift recorded the beginning of Daylight Savings EP at New Monkey Studio in Los Angeles, California in April 2006. Chairlift relocated to Williamsburg, Brooklyn in August 2006 and signed to Kanine Records in June 2007. Patrick Wimberly joined the group in early 2007. After writing and recording while Polachek was still in college, Chairlift released their first full-length album, Does You Inspire You, in 2008. Their song "Bruises" was featured in the 2008 Apple commercial that launched the fourth-generation iPod Nano. The single "Evident Utensil" was nominated for an award in the "Breakthrough Video" category at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. The album was rereleased by Columbia Records on April 21, 2009, after the band signed with the major label. The rerelease included two additional tracks not on the original release and a longer version of "Make Your Mind Up". Chairlift went on their first international tour, opening for bands like Phoenix, The Killers, and MGMT.

Pfenning left Chairlift in 2010 to pursue his solo career in Rewards.

On September 7, 2011 they released the video to their single "Amanaemonesia" from their second album Something. For their 2012 single "Met Before" Chairlift created an interactive, choose-your-own-adventure video that Buzzfeed awarded the number one spot on its "23 Best Music Videos of 2012" end-of-year round up. Their sophomore album Something released via Columbia Records on January 24, 2012. Something features production from Dan Carey and Alan Moulder. After the record was released in Japan, Polachek co-directed a video for a Japanese version of "I Belong In Your Arms" with director/animator Eric Epstein.

Through the time Polachek was finishing her solo record Arcadia, Chairlift have been working on their upcoming third record.

Who Are…Ice Choir

By Annie Zaleski, Contributor

Kurt Feldman is one of the busiest musicians in New York. Although his chiptune-flecked dreampop project the Depreciation Guild broke up in 2010, he currently drums for the Pains of Being Pure at Heart and produces bands in his apartment-based studio. Feldman is also a rabid fan of obscure new-wave (favorites include Danish electropop act Gangway and noted cult figure Bill Nelson), Japanese synthpop and shoegaze bands — all of which inspire and inform his new… more »
