Biography

Formed by siblings Rob and Sara Montejo, Smashing Orange was the American response to the shoegaze movement afoot in the U.K. during the early to mid-'90s, with influences of '60s garage rock thrown into the mix for good measure. Their initial singles and EPs were released in the U.K. to much acclaim, but failed to measure an equal response on their home shores. They released their debut LP, The Glass Bead Game, on the American Native imprint in 1992, with their follow-up, No Return in the End, released on major label MCA two years later. Shortly after its release the group faded away into obscurity and disbanded. An anthology of their early work (appropriately titled 1991) was issued on the Elephant Stone label in 2005.
